Upon application of Nualgi Aquarium, the Nano Silica base within the Nualgi formula carries nutrients to Diatom Algae which then begin to multiply. These new Diatom Algae consume N (Nitrogen) and P (Phosphorous), robbing the nuisance algae of the chemicals they need to grow. Diatoms also release O2 & consume CO2, thus increasing the dissolved oxygen levels and helps aerobic bacteria break down organic matter. As this occurs, zooplankton grow by consuming the Diatoms, and finally, zooplankton get consumed by fish and coral because that is their favorite live food. Hooray for free fish food.

Nualgi Aquarium restores the natural food chain in water and prevents growth of nuisance algae as diatoms produced by Nualgi out-compete these nuisance algae for nutrients.

Traditionally, aquarists have considered nitrates and phosphates to be a problem and have been striving to control them through water change and other products aimed at this solving this issue.

Nualgi believes that N and P are not pollutants. Without N and P, nothing would grow, not even bacteria or coral. What level of N and P is acceptable is a matter of debate. When you can grow enough diatoms to consume nutrients, no level is too high.

Excess P will cause Cyanobacteria to bloom and this will deprive coral of oxygen. The problem is therefore cyano and not the P level. Diatoms consume N and P and they are consumed by zoo-plankton and fish. So some of the N and P is locked up in the new biomass created. To the extent diatoms are consumed by fish, use of fish feed can be reduced and that will limit the input of new N and P.

Nano refers to the metric prefix for 10^-9  and means one-billionth of something. Nanoscience is the study of structures made small enough to take on new properties. For example, nano-particles of gold appear red in color and melt at significantly lower temperatures than normal gold slabs (~300 °C as compared to 1064 °C)[1].

Traditional products contain either:

  • Coarse particles with a diameter of 2,500 to 10,000 nanometers
  • Fine particles with a diameter of 100 to 2,500 nanometers.

Nualgi particles are 5 to 50 nanometers in diameter (1 millimeter = 1,000,000 nanometers).

Nano particles are known to have different properties than larger sized particles of the same element [2]. These tiny particles have a larger active surface area and can suspend themselves in liquid and are therefore more efficient by being bioavailable.

Scale of Nano-Technology

Bioavailability is a measurement of the rate and extent to which a drug or nutrient reaches the systemic circulation.  For example a drug injected intravenously is much more bioavailable as compared to a drug ingested orally.

For plants and organisms, it is a significant scientific challenge to provide nutrients in bioavailable form.  Nualgi is the only product of its kind that effectively addresses this challenge in a water body.  It’s nutrient particles are small enough to suspend themselves in the water column and are therefore more available for diatom algae to bloom.

Freshwater and Saltwater are inherently different, down to the way that the Nitrogen Cycle circulates in each tank. In order to maximize the effects of Nualgi Aquarium for tank owners, we needed to specialize our formula and product to work with both categories of tanks. This way, aquarium owners can be confident about the amount they dose, the effect on their tank inhabitants, and the general balance of their tank environment.

Feedback from customers and improved nano-technology were the driving force behind the creation of the Nualgi Aquarium Freshwater and Saltwater products. Aquarium owners desired an easier-to-use product, and once it became apparent how our improved technology could be specialized, it was essential that we passed along our new technology to aquarium users worldwide. Plus, there are no confusing calculations! Two easy-to-use products with dosing instructions and a pipette for any size of tank.

Nulagi will work well with planted aquariums as it provides more nutrients required for the growth of plants. While about 90% of the nutrients in Nualgi are being used up for diatom bloom, 10% would still be available for the plants in the aquarium. As nutrients in Nualgi are in bio available form, they are quickly absorbed by the macrophytes leading to healthier plants. Trace nutrients provided by Nualgi can be particularly deficient in the aquarium if soft water is being used for planted aquariums. As aquarists gain experience with Nualgi, they will be able to vary the dosage of other nutrients being added to the tank to maintain an ideal nutrient level.

Nualgi is a nutrient mix to promote controlled growth of better species of diatoms in your tank. Diatoms consume nutrients from left over fish food and fish waste which deprives nuisance algae of the same nutrients. Nuisance algae are thus gradually starved. Diatoms are consumed by zooplankton and zooplankton by fish and coral.

For best results combine with good husbandry practices relating to feeding, lighting, water changes, cleaning, skimmer capacity, and filter media such as carbon filters and GFO.

Nualgi is not an algaecide and therefore its action is gradual. If you have had serious algae issues in the past or have trouble maintaining water parameters, please exercise caution and patience while starting with the supplement.
Some of the elements that inhibit diatom growth are high water temperatures (above 77) and presence of phenol and phenolic compounds in your tank.
In a small number of cases, Nualgi can cause an increase in the nuisance algae. This issue has been reported by reef tank owners only. We believe that this is due to locked up nutrients in the substrate or rock which Nualgi purges. It can also happen when diatoms are not growing by addition of Nualgi (due to presence of phenols or water temperature being too high) but Nualgi is purging the nutrients from the substrate and rock.
To lower the risk of this happening, we recommend a lower starting dose in reef tanks. If nuisance algae increase s as a result of the first or second Nualgi dose, then you should stop further dosing of Nualgi and contact us. If tank shows signs of improvement then you can gradually up the dosage over a 2 week period to bring it to recommended levels. The recommended dose in reef tanks is 1 teaspoon (5 ml) per 30 gallons per week. However we recommend that you start with .5 teaspoon (2.5 ml) per 30 gallons per week.
Where possible, we recommend a daily dosage of Nualgi instead of a weekly dose. Daily dosing will further reduce your downside risk of increased algae. Daily dose is one-seventh of the weekly dose. Should you see increased algae after the first few doses, please stop further dosing of Nualgi and contact us.

Not all diatoms are the same. There are over 200 genera of living of diatoms. When Nualgi is used better species of Diatoms will grow and these will out compete the present species growing in your tank. The new species will be better food for zooplankton, so they will be consumed. In tanks in which Nualgi is being used, there are no complaints of excess diatoms, since they are being consumed. As you are having a problem with accumulation of diatoms, it is possible that the diatoms growing in your tank are not being consumed, as they may be inferior species. It is also possible that the brown algae growing in your tank is not diatoms at all but some other algae that is also brown. If so, Nualgi will help clear it up.

Green and Blue-Green algae proliferates in warmer temperatures while diatoms like lower temperatures. This is one of the reasons why natural lakes are so much clearer in spring than in summer. For algae to grow, it needs nutrients (N and P), light and warm water.

For Nualgi to help prevent nuisance algae from taking hold in your tank, recommend maintaining your water temperature at 75-76 degrees F.

What about lighting?

Beside water temperature and nutrients, algae needs light to grow. We recommend around 8 hours of lighting for your tank. It is also important to ensure that the light is not too intense at the bottom of the tank near the substrate. Nualgi should be dosed early in the lighting cycle with at least 4 hours of lighting left to go.

Yellow color of your aquarium water suggests that you have a buildup of phenols, phenolic compounds, carbohydrates from secretion of algae etc. This can be detected by taking a water sample from your aquarium and placing it in a white dish. At higher levels they can be harmful to your tank. You can read more on reef dreams

Phenol and phenolic compounds inhibit the growth of diatoms and therefore render Nualgi ineffective!

To remove these compounds from your water, you will need to perform a series of rapid water changes to dilute them out of your water and ensure your filter media is clean, your skimmer is working well, is of sufficient capacity relative to your tank size, and you are changing your carbon filter in a timely manner. Once the water color is determined to be normal, you can begin the Nualgi dosing.

In planted aquariums the phenolic compounds are absorbed by the vacuoles in the leaf and stored safely; hence we do not see this issue in planted aquariums.

Nualgi is a patented nano silica based nano nutrient formula in size range of 5-100 nm. The silica becomes both the carrier for other nutrients and the nutrient by itself. It is in a water dispersible particulate form having the important micronutrient -iron (0.01% to 50% of Fe) and  other micronutrients- Mn, Zn, Co, Cu, Mo, B, S, Ca, Mg, P, K,and mixtures thereof in the proportion 0.001% to 30% of the weight of silica.

Because of its nanosize, Nualgi is able to pervade very small spaces in the subsurface and remain suspended in water. This allows particles to travel farther than larger, macro-sized particles thereby increasing the bioavailability of the nutrients for easy absorption. The iron and other micronutrients in nano form cannot precipitate out or gel in the water as it happens when they are added directly as salts

Yes, Nualgi has other benefits besides algae control such as better fish health, higher dissolved oxygen levels , coral growth, polyp extension and lower levels of Co2, nitrates and phosphates. If your aquarium does not have an algae problem we recommend dosing 1/4 of the recommended dosage the first week. Monitor the changes that occur and adjust dosing based on the results. Increase the dosage a little each week until you work up to the recommended dose of 1-1.25ml per 30 gallons of water.

If you notice any negative impact to the tank, discontinue dosing and contact us immediately.

Users may notice a bloom of cyano/red slime algae on dosing Nualgi on the glass, rocks or sand bed. This is a positive sign as this is cyano that existed in the water column and the rock surfaces before Nualgi dosing and are now crashing out of the water. If this does not happen the cyano may manifest even more dangerously in the future affecting the fish and corals. The crashed out algae would be easier to wipe and this should be done frequently in the first few days from the glass and surfaces. We understand it looks ugly but it should be seen as a positive rather than a negative aspect of Nualgi. It is like the proverbial bitter medicine one needs to have to cure the illness.
