Dosing

You may switch to the new formula at any point during your dosing schedule as long as is it stays consistent with your maintenance routine.

We improved the formula based on many of our longtime customers who required better dosing options for smaller tanks. Although many of our users also have very large aquariums, we’ve heard that it’s more difficult to dose for those smaller tanks using our old formula. The new formula has been improved to be more specific for each type of tank as well to improve the results for those smaller tanks. In some cases, dosing may be higher if you’re one of customers that has a very large, thriving tank. These voluminous tanks may require higher dosing than your previous old Nualgi formula.

We recommend that you continue with your normal water change routine until your water is clear and your tank is algae free. Make sure that you dose Nualgi after your water change. Once your tank is looking good and algae free, you can experiment with less frequent water changes. Trialists have been able to gradually delay water changes from once per week to once per 3 weeks or longer.

Nualgi works on the nutrients buried in the substrate or pores of your rocks. This may initially show up as more algae build up in your tank after the first 1-2 doses. If this happens in your tank then we recommend additional water changes to get rid of some of the nutrients being purged by Nualgi.

Nualgi should be dosed after the tank has finished cycling and you have introduced fish into your tank successfully.  Nualgi produces diatoms that are consumed by zooplankton and zooplankton are consumed by fish. So if you have no fish, coral or zooplankton in your tank then Nualgi will cause excess nutrients.

UV is used to kill bacteria and cyanobacteria. It does not kill diatoms but may reduce the growth rates as diatoms need many bacteria to grow.

Sometimes it can be hard to maintain a daily dosing schedule, but those who have an ATO may benefit more from a steady dosing coming from the ATO.  It’s important to make sure that there is enough flow in the ATO to insure no settling occurs.

Yes.  As the tank cleans up and the water becomes clear with minimal algae build up, you can experiment with removing GFO.

Correct dosage of Nualgi is generally sufficient to re-establish the natural food chain in the water thereby precluding the need to use other nutrients or nutrient balancing products. However it is not advisable to make abrupt changes to current practices that are working. As Nualgi starts to deliver results, you may carefully experiment in reducing the dosage of other nutrients.

As Nualgi produces food for corals, it leads to coral growth and polyp extension. Corals also stay open longer when using Nualgi. This increases the demand for Calcium in tanks with a large number of hard and soft corals. This can throw off the pH and dKH levels as they are inter-connected with Calcium. We recommend that for such tanks, Calcium levels should be carefully monitored and boosted when necessary.

Yes, as you start it is advisable to have phosphate and nitrate removal media. Once Nualgi balances the tank you can experiment with removing bio pellets.

Nualgi contains calcium in bio-available form and may reduce the amount of Kalkwasser needed. If you are already using Kalkwasser, we recommend that you monitor the water levels and add Kalkwasser as needed to maintain calcium and alkalinity. If you are using a dosing pump, drip line or adding it to an auto top off you will need to make adjustments based on how Nualgi impacts calcium and alkalinity levels in your tank.
