Always shake the bottle before applying to water.

WHAT TO EXPECT
You should see less algae build up on the glass and eventually you’ll be able to reduce the frequency of your water changes.
If you have coral, you should see them blossom and become happier with polyp extension.
In all tanks water should look more clear and fish more active & vibrant.
BEFORE YOU DOSE
Shake the bottle vigorously and apply the correct dosage of Nualgi into the tank or sump.

At least 4 hours of lighting after dosing are recommended for Diatom growth. To maximize the effectiveness of Nualgi, dose at the beginning of your lighting cycle.
FREQUENCY
Freshwater:  Dose once every week.
Saltwater: Dose once a week, if your nuisance algae problem is severe.
Reef Tanks: Daily dosing recommended, but not required.
-In reef tanks, start dosing with .5 ml / 30 gallons per week OR use 1/7th daily.
-After a few successful weeks in your reef tank, gradually work up to a ratio of 1 ml / 30 gallons per week.
STORAGE
Store in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. Nualgi does not require refrigeration.

Please take pictures and keep records of your water levels to gauge progress.

DOSAGE REFERENCE TABLE:

Dosing

You may switch to the new formula at any point during your dosing schedule as long as is it stays consistent with your maintenance routine.

We improved the formula based on many of our longtime customers who required better dosing options for smaller tanks. Although many of our users also have very large aquariums, we’ve heard that it’s more difficult to dose for those smaller tanks using our old formula. The new formula has been improved to be more specific for each type of tank as well to improve the results for those smaller tanks. In some cases, dosing may be higher if you’re one of customers that has a very large, thriving tank. These voluminous tanks may require higher dosing than your previous old Nualgi formula.

We recommend that you continue with your normal water change routine until your water is clear and your tank is algae free. Make sure that you dose Nualgi after your water change. Once your tank is looking good and algae free, you can experiment with less frequent water changes. Trialists have been able to gradually delay water changes from once per week to once per 3 weeks or longer.

Nualgi works on the nutrients buried in the substrate or pores of your rocks. This may initially show up as more algae build up in your tank after the first 1-2 doses. If this happens in your tank then we recommend additional water changes to get rid of some of the nutrients being purged by Nualgi.

Nualgi should be dosed after the tank has finished cycling and you have introduced fish into your tank successfully.  Nualgi produces diatoms that are consumed by zooplankton and zooplankton are consumed by fish. So if you have no fish, coral or zooplankton in your tank then Nualgi will cause excess nutrients.

UV is used to kill bacteria and cyanobacteria. It does not kill diatoms but may reduce the growth rates as diatoms need many bacteria to grow.

Sometimes it can be hard to maintain a daily dosing schedule, but those who have an ATO may benefit more from a steady dosing coming from the ATO.  It’s important to make sure that there is enough flow in the ATO to insure no settling occurs.

Yes.  As the tank cleans up and the water becomes clear with minimal algae build up, you can experiment with removing GFO.

Correct dosage of Nualgi is generally sufficient to re-establish the natural food chain in the water thereby precluding the need to use other nutrients or nutrient balancing products. However it is not advisable to make abrupt changes to current practices that are working. As Nualgi starts to deliver results, you may carefully experiment in reducing the dosage of other nutrients.

As Nualgi produces food for corals, it leads to coral growth and polyp extension. Corals also stay open longer when using Nualgi. This increases the demand for Calcium in tanks with a large number of hard and soft corals. This can throw off the pH and dKH levels as they are inter-connected with Calcium. We recommend that for such tanks, Calcium levels should be carefully monitored and boosted when necessary.

Yes, as you start it is advisable to have phosphate and nitrate removal media. Once Nualgi balances the tank you can experiment with removing bio pellets.

Nualgi contains calcium in bio-available form and may reduce the amount of Kalkwasser needed. If you are already using Kalkwasser, we recommend that you monitor the water levels and add Kalkwasser as needed to maintain calcium and alkalinity. If you are using a dosing pump, drip line or adding it to an auto top off you will need to make adjustments based on how Nualgi impacts calcium and alkalinity levels in your tank.

Post Nualgi Dosing

Every system is different, but some of the possible reasons Nualgi would not work in a tank are:

    1. Over feeding. We recommend feeding once every other day.
    2. Poor quality lights and/or incorrect lighting periods. Ask experts in our forum for specific recommendations.
    3. Excess nutrients in the water from using nutrient products alongside Nualgi.
    4. Water temperature is too high for diatoms to grow.
    5. Water contains Phenols and Phenolic compounds inhibiting growth of diatoms.

After prolonged use of additives, excessive feeding and poor husbandry, it is quite likely that the excess nutrients are embedded in the aquarium bed, particularly in large aquariums. Nualgi treats excess nutrients both at the planktonic and benthic level. Therefore in the early stages of Nualgi dosing, it will purge these locked up nutrients on aquarium bed and these become nutrients for algae and cyano. These nutrients would cause an algae or cyano bloom eventually, so Nualgi is preventing a larger bloom from happening in the future.

We recommend that you perform frequent and larger than normal water changes during the first few weeks of dosing to help remove any excess nutrients. Physically remove as much buildup as possible before doing a water change to help remove larger patches of algae or cyano. Reduce lighting and feeding and make sure filter media, skimmer etc are performing well. If possible increase the flow in the affected areas and switch to daily dosing of Nualgi.

As Nualgi dosing progresses, the diatoms produced will starve all algae including cyano and the tank will gradually clear up. There are reports of cyano being gone within 3 days of first Nualgi dose. That usually means that there wasn’t a significant excessive nutrient issue in the tank in the first place. Because every tank is different, time taken by Nualgi to starve all algae can vary.

Dahlyvh on YouTube got rid of 100% of his black beard algae, but it took all of 8 weeks!

Aquarists can help Nualgi’s effectiveness by taking the following actions:

  • Restricting  duration that the lights are on to no more than 8 hours per day.
  • Reduce feed to fish to once in 2 days. Quantity should be as much as can be consumed by fish in 3 minutes.
  • Use GFO or other phosphate suppressor for some time till tank clears out
  • Follow Nualgi dosing instructions

Yes, daily dosing is more effective than weekly dosing. We do not recommend daily dosing on our dosing instructions because most aquarists are not at home to dose their tank when the lights come on. A daily dose is one-seventh of a weekly dose. For example if your reef tank is 210 gallons then the weekly recommended dose is 7 ml and the daily dose would be 1 ml.

We strongly recommend against overdosing Nualgi Aquarium. To dose in a nano tank, we recommend that you use a dropper. 20 drops equal 1 ml. We recommend that you stir the Nualgi dose in a cup full of tank water and dose it over a 2-3 hour period to avoid any negative consequences of overdosing.
